Year 1 - Home Learning Ideas:

Subject

Activity Ideas

Reading

  • Read for 10 minutes every day
  • Keep a record of the books you read · Write a book review for each book you finish
  • What was your favourite part of the story? Why?
  • Share a book with someone in your family
  • Ask them questions about the story to check they are listening carefully!
  • Listen to and read along with: https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/rumble-in-the-jungle/
  • Can pair any of the rhyming words in this story?
  • What animal is your favourite?

Writing

  • Watch and practice your sounds with the alphablocks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN8gsI2FBQw
  • How many words can you write that have the ‘oo’ and 'oa' sound in them?
  • Have a practice writing your phonemes each day, saying the sounds as you write, and forming your letters carefully so that your writing looks its best.
  • We are now in Summer. Can you think of any adjectives to describe what the weather is like outside in this season?
  • Try and write some sentences using these words. Perhaps you could write a story set in the season of summer?

Maths

  • Keep practising writing your numbers every day
  • Add pairs of numbers so the answer is always bigger than 10. Write out each number sentence carefully
  • Look around your home for shapes, go on a shape hunt!
  • Can you find a square, circle, triangle and rectangle? Can you say how many corners each shape has? How many sides does it have? Are all the sides the same length? 
  • On a piece of paper can you draw a picture using the four basic shapes? You could draw a face, a clown, a car or even a robot.
  • Take a photo of your shape creations and send them to school.

Other Challenges

  • Art: Can you find something in your home that you would take to the seaside? It might be a towel, a pair of sunglasses or football.

  • Looking closely at your seaside item, what colours can you see, is it made of different shapes?

  • Can you draw your seaside item? Once you have finished your drawing does it need to be coloured in, what colours will you need to use? Have you drawn your object quite flat or have you tried to make it 3D?

Activity Ideas

Reading

  • Read for 10 minutes every day
  • Write a list of the book titles that you have read
  • Read an article from a newspaper – what did you find out?
  • Read a story and draw a story map of the events that happened.
  • Write a list of 3 stories or books you would like to read this week and tick them off as you finish them
  • Tell others in your house what you like about your books and what you would like to read next.
  • Read a story that a friend or family member has recommended to you. Can you then suggest a good book for a friend to read?
  • Login to Reading Eggs and pick a  book to read

Writing

  • Pick 5 new words from the CEW Year 2 list and practise them. Ask an adult to test you on them at the end of the week
  • Practoce writing sentences that include your CEW's - dont forget capital letters, full stops and finger spaces! 
  • Find out what jobs people had in castles and write what your favourite and least favourite would be
  • Write a list of the people who lived in castles
  • Think of some questions you would like to ask someone in a castle about their job and write them down
  • Imagine you were a Knight in a castle, write a diary of what you have to do all day
  • Make a leaflet or poster to show the different parts of a castle and what they were used for

Maths

  • Log in to TT Rockstars or Maths Whizz and try and improve your score each day
  • Practise counting around a clock in 5s. Ask an adult to help you tell the time to quarter past and quarter to. What do you notice about the hands?
  • Make Rainbow number bonds - use a different colour to show each pair of numbers to make 20.
  • Can you now do number bonds to 100?
  • Think of a castle maths word problem to test out on your family. An example is: If there are 3 Knights with 5 horses each, how many horses are there altogether?
  • Play guess the number- think of a number and give clues about it. (Odd/even, 2 digits, more than/less than)
  • Login to Maths Whizz and complete a challenge for 15 minutes.
  • Watch the hands on the clock when you start and when you finish to check it has been 15 minutes.
  • Pick a 2 digit number and practise adding 5 and subtracting  5 from different numbers.
